A US passport book allows international air travel, as well as travel by all other means of transport. On the other hand, a passport card is only for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.
The application process for both documents is similar. It’s possible to hold both a passport card and a passport book at the same time. The official fee for a US passport book ($165) is more expensive than a passport card ($65).
Both passport books and passport cards are valid for 10 years for adults, and 5 years for children (US citizens under 16 years of age).
