An abstract birth certificate is one where selected information has been copied from the original birth certificate or from a database and has been added to a new, simplied form.
Most birth certificates today are abstracted as they are printed from computer databases which contain the copied information from the original document.
An abstract birth certificate are valid can be used for any purpose, with exceptions in some cases, such as obtaining an U.S. passport or school registration, as some abstracts do not list the individual's parents.
