Understanding Florida Divorce Certificates vs. Divorce Decrees
A Florida divorce certificate, also called a dissolution of marriage certificate, summarizes key details from the court judgment, including:
- Names of both parties
- Date of dissolution
- County where the dissolution was granted
It serves as official proof that the divorce or annulment was finalized. Florida divorce certificates are issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics. After a divorce or annulment is recorded, the clerk forwards the report to the Bureau for permanent filing, usually within 60 days.
A divorce decree is the full court-issued document containing all legal details about the separation, such as property division, custody arrangements, or spousal support. To obtain the decree, you must contact the clerk of court in the county where the divorce was finalized.
