An official death certificate is commonly required to settle estates, handle inheritance matters, claim life insurance or pension benefits, close bank accounts, or transfer property titles.
Government agencies and financial institutions usually require a certified copy as proof of death. The New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry issues official documents for births, deaths, marriages, and civil unions that occur in the State.
You can request a New Jersey death certificate in person, but it’s more convenient to make an online order. Our digital application service helps you prepare the required forms and supporting documents, making the process hassle-free and reducing errors and delays. Apply for a Death Certificate now

Who Can Request a New Jersey Death Certificate?
For 40 years after a death, New Jersey limits access to certified death certificates for privacy reasons. To order an official copy of a death record in this period, you need to prove that you’re eligible.
People with the following relationship to the deceased person can request a certified copy of the record:
-
Spouse, civil union partner, or domestic partner
-
Parent, legal guardian, child, grandchild, sibling, or other immediate family member
-
Legal representative, executor, or individual with a documented legal or financial interest
Government agencies acting in an official capacity can also request a certified copy. Any individual may obtain authorization to receive the record under a court order if they prove they have a legal interest.
Types of New Jersey Death Certificate
New Jersey issues certified death certificates for legal and official use. These copies are printed on secure paper and include the state seal.
If you’re not eligible for a certified copy, you can request a certification of death, a type of informational record copy for genealogical or personal research purposes. This is not valid for legal purposes.
New Jersey Death Certificate Cost
The cost of a New Jersey death certificate is $25 for the first certified copy, which includes the search and printing fees. Additional copies ordered at the same time cost another $2. If the record isn’t found, you’ll be issued with a No Record statement.
To pay the corresponding fee, include a check or money order made payable to “Treasurer, State of New Jersey”. Cash is not accepted.
New Jersey Death Certificate Processing Times
Mail-in death record requests in New Jersey are processed by the state in the order received. How long it takes to get your copy varies depending on demand. In most cases, orders are processed within 10-12 weeks.
In-person requests at local county clerk’s offices may be completed more quickly. Call the county office where the death occurred to learn their current wait time or whether an express service is available for in person requests.
