Who Can Request an Arizona Death Certificate?
Arizona is a closed-records state, meaning only certain people can order a certified death certificate. This includes:
-
Spouse, parent, child, grandchild, or sibling
-
Grandparent or great-grandparent
-
Person with a legal interest or proof of a financial claim
-
Executor, legal representative, or person named in court order
When you apply for a copy of the death certificate, you must provide a valid ID. You might also need to provide documentation proving your relationship with the deceased person or legal interest in their estate.
Types of Arizona Death Certificates
The State of Arizona maintains death records from July 1909 onward. You can apply for two different types of documents:
-
Certified copy: An official copy with a raised seal, which is only available to close family and legal representatives. This is the version of the document that is accepted for legal and official use, such as filing an insurance claim, or settling an estate.
-
Non-certified genealogical copy: A copy of the death record that’s available to the public after 50 years through the ADHS Genealogy website. This version cannot be used in official matters, and is designed for family history research only.
Arizona Death Certificate Cost
Certified copies of a death certificate for Arizona are charged at $20 each. You can request multiple copies at a time, as families often need various documents for legal, banking, and insurance firms.
If you’d like to purchase a non-certified genealogical copy, the fee is $5 per certificate.
Fees are generally consistent across counties, but they can vary at some county clerk’s offices. If you’re filing your request in person, call ahead to check your local office’s fees and accepted payment methods.
Arizona Death Certificate Processing Times
Processing times can vary, but mail applications in Arizona usually take around 5 business days. There is no rush service available for mail orders.
Same-day service is available at some county offices if the record is on file and all the requirements are met. If you need your death certificate copy urgently, call your closest office to check their current wait periods.
