Who Can Request an Alabama Death Certificate?
State laws in Alabama dictate who can order a copy of a birth certificate. For deaths less than 25 years ago, access is restricted to close family and legal representatives of the deceased person. The following people can request a copy:
-
Spouse
-
Parent, or sibling
-
Child, or grandchild
-
Estate executor
-
Court-appointed representative of the family or estate
Other family members, such as an ex-spouse, step-sibling, or grandparent, can request a copy of the record if they have documented legal authority, or other legal proof of entitlement.
Eligible applicants need proof of ID to request a copy of the certificate. This must be provided as part of your application, with a photocopy that shows both sides of your ID document clearly.
After 25 years, the record becomes public, and anyone may request a copy from the AL Center of Health Statistics. Payment of the application fee is still required.
Types of Alabama Death Certificate
Alabama’s Department of Public Health is the agency who issues certified copies of death certificates for legal use, with records on file since 1908.
For deaths that occurred in 1991 or later, you may request a certified copy with or without the cause of death listed. For deaths prior to 1991, the medical section is included in the record.
Alabama Death Certificate Cost
Alabama charges a $15 fee to search for the record. This includes one certified copy or a Certificate of Failure to Find. If the record cannot be found, you’re not eligible for a refund of this fee.
You can order additional copies of the same record in one application. Each extra copy is charged at $6. Alabama also offers a rush service for an added $15.
Alabama Death Certificate Processing Times
Mail applications for death certificate copies in Alabama usually take about 7–10 days from the time your form is received. However, how long it takes to get can vary depending on demand and whether your packet is complete and legible.
If you visit an AL county health department, you may be able to get your death record copy issued while you wait. This is usually the fastest way to get your record if you need it urgently.

FAQ About Alabama (AL) Death Certificates
-
In Alabama, not all death records are available to the public. State laws restrict access for 25 years from the date of death. After 25 years, the record becomes public and can be requested by anyone on payment of the processing fee.
-
The State of Alabama requires deaths to be registered within five days. Once registered, you can usually get a copy of the certificate of death on the same day at a Public Health Department Office. Mail-in orders usually take around 7 to 10 days to process and deliver.
-
Alabama death certificate fees are charged at $15. You can request additional copies for $6 each when ordered at the same time, or register for expedited delivery for an extra $15. These fees are non-refundable, even if the record is not found.
-
To get a copy of a record less than 25 years old, you need a valid ID and must be eligible to request it (close family, or legal representatives only). You also need to provide enough details about the decedent, like their full name, and date and place of death, to locate the record.
For certificates that are more than 25 years old, ID is generally not required. However, you’ll still need to provide key information about the deceased person so that the State can locate the record.
